DebateFest Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What is DebateFest?
DebateFest is an educational program and competition designed to help students develop communication, critical thinking, leadership, research, and public speaking skills through structured debate experiences.
Who can participate?
DebateFest welcomes students from elementary school through high school. Students from and school system are invited to participate (public, private, or home school). Organizations may also register students.
What should students bring to DebateFest Events?
Students should bring a charged laptop or tablet, note-taking materials, and any competition materials provided by their coach or school. Students should also have their own hot spot device.
When students receive their topic and begin the research, can their coach assist them?
The coaching to assist students should be completed by the time they arrive on competition day. We want all of our competitors to be on a level playing field so coaches won’t be allowed to guide or assist with the students’ research.
Are Debate Teams allowed to participate in multiple divisional rounds?
Yes, debaters who do not advance to the Regional Level, are permitted to attend any other divisional competition to meet qualifying requirements for Regionals. Teams that qualify for the Regional, however, may only attend one Regional Competition to qualify for Nationals.
When do students receive their topics and room assignments?
Once the orientation is completed, room assignments and topics will be assigned and the team packets will be distributed.
Are students and teams allowed to participate in both the Argumentum and Solve & Debate Competition?
Yes, students and teams may participate in both competitions. The Coach must indicate this request during the registration period so that the scheduling can be properly communicated for the teams.
Do students need prior debate experience?
No. DebateFest welcomes both beginners and experienced debaters.

Questions From The DebateFest Community

A: No. Third Graders are only allowed to participate in the Solve & Defend Event. Argumentum starts at 4th Grade.
Q: Can students participate individually?

A: Yes. Students may register individually and be assigned to teams when appropriate.
Q: How are judges selected?
